This year we have 9 designated Stableford League Events with the best 3 results to count in the League Competition.

In the event of a tie the player with the best 4th Stableford points result will win; if there is still a tie, then the best 5th result will decide etc. If there is still a tie after the
8th result has been used, then the player with the lowest handicap will win.

We will be organizing a number of day trips to Pine Valley during the year and the dates will be announced nearer the time. These were very popular and a lot of fun last year and we hope you will support them again this year.

Cheers, Richard

Golf - Where did we begin?

When Ian Powell was the General Manager he organized the occasional KCC Golf Day!

When Mike Williams was the General Manager he organized the occasional KCC Golf Day!

On one of these occasions the participants were imbibing the amber nectar after a round at Kau Sai Chau and this continued for a period before, during and after Dinner and Presentation back at KCC. Many words were exchanged - are we on recognizable territory here? On this occasion the words were meaningful and it was decided to carry out a survey to establish if there was sufficient interest within the KCC membership to start a KCC Golf Society. A questionnaire was sent out with the monthly Newsletter (October 1996). There was an encouraging response with 80 replies.

The December Newsletter advertised the EGM of a proposed KCC Golf Society on 20 January 1997. The first Committee was then formed with Andy Daws as Captain, Lawrie Taylor as Secretary and a number of flexible arms being manipulated.

One of the original committee members was K C Shing and he has remained on the committee ever since, filling the role of Treasurer for the past few years. At the first official committee meeting on the 28 January 1997 it was decided that the first KCC Golf Society Golf Day would be arranged on 11 March at Kau Sai Chau. At that time there were about 30 regular members.

Andy Daws remained as Captain for around two years until his family moved back to Australia and his time became more restricted. A number of the original committee members were also leaving Hong Kong. The Golf Society has gradually increased in membership numbers over the years until at the beginning of 2004 we had a membership of 160.

The Centenary year was a huge year for all Sections of KCC and for the Golf Society it started well with our team winning the First Division Championship of the Carlsberg Inter-league competition.

It was decided to organize a Golf Society Centenary Championship. In our wildest dreams we were hoping to celebrate the occasion with 100 players but being realistic our aim was for a more modest 60. Planning took place over a number of months with a sub-committee of K C Shing as Chairman, Richard Tinlin as Golf Day Organizer and Regina Chugani as Sponsorship and Entertainment Organizer. Within two weeks of posting the enrolment list we realized that we were on to a winner; still three months to the event and we had 85 golfers enrolled. We were then under pressure to expand our booking from 100 players and with great reluctance increased it to 120. This number was almost reached but nearer the day business commitments and personal problems reduced the figure to a final 105.

As KCC President Ronnie Ng aptly put it when presenting trophies, 'Never has such a large number of KCC members taken part in a single sport on the one day.'

And what a day it was - glorious weather, everything running like clockwork with 105 members teeing off at Kau Sai Chau on the South Course and 143 enjoying the presentation and buffet dinner held on the cricket ground in the evening, helped along by some great entertainment.

One interesting comment from a Hong Kong international golfer who was playing on the North Course on the same day was, 'How did you manage to get everyone to wear the Golf Society Blue Shirt? All of the South Course is a sea of blue shirts!'

'Easy, you just let everyone know from the outset that this is an event organized by the Golf Society and that you must wear the GS shirt in order to be eligible to win a prize, and everyone wants to win a prize in the Centenary Championships - they don't come around too often!'

Comments from many members at the end of the day were, 'That was the best day ever!'

Moving on from the Centenary Golf Day, 2004 was an important year for the Society as debentures at Pine Valley were purchased by KCC and this move, which has enhanced our standing as a Club and brought us in line with the other major sporting clubs in Hong Kong will also encourage golf within KCC. With a strong committee we are hoping to greatly enhance the facilities available to Society members so that more people will be able to take up and enjoy this wonderful but sometimes frustrating sport.

As some people would say, a bad day on the golf course is much better than a great day in the office, so get out there, enjoy the fresh air, great views and exercise but remember to always pack your sense of humour. When you smile you use 14 muscles, when you frown you use 78, so keep on smiling and all the energy you save will enable you to enjoy the après golf to the full.
